Introduction
This course has been designed for any person who needs a good understanding
in the theory and practical skills of advanced M.I.G. welding.
Objectives
To train course members in the safe use of the equipment and in advanced
M.I.G. welding skills using mild steel plate.
Aims
- To make course members aware of the techniques in heavy plate welding
- To be able to weld to an acceptable standard
- To be able to weld in the vertical and overhead positions
- To be able to recognize faults and causes
- To be able to rectify faults
- To be able to adjust voltage/current to suit work
- To be able to set up the equipment safely

Theoretical
- Safety in the use of equipment
- Personal safety
- Electrical safety
- Set-up and tacking procedure
- Dip transfer effect
- Spray transfer effect
- Multi-run procedures
- Gases in use
- Adjustment of voltage/Current control
- Adjustment of choke control
- Adjustments needed when changing wire size
Practical
- Correct safety procedures
- Correct setting of the machine
- Correct use of torch angle
- Correct set-up and tacking procedures
- Rectification of faults
- Correct speed of travel
- Fillet and lap joints in the vertical and overhead positions (vertical up)
- Single and multi-run techniques
- Practice to reach an acceptable standard
