Chapter 8 Signing, Lighting and Guarding

Course Aims

To acquaint those engaged with Roadworks or Temporary Restrictions which cause partial or total obstruction of the Highways whether on the carriageway, footway, cycleway, verge or hard shoulder with sufficient knowledge or signing, lighting and guarding methods in order to minimize delays and eliminate risk of accidents whilst maintaining a safe environment for the general public, road user and those engaged with the works.

Course Objectives

On completion of the training each delegate will be able to:

  • Select position, erect and maintain the correct signs, warning and information notices, lamps, cones, barriers, etc in the prescribed manner.
  • Understand the need to permit and maintain controlled movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic at the site of the works and other areas so affected by the works.
  • Appreciate the requirements of safe practices whilst carrying out works in the highway with particular emphasis to the protection of the general public and those associated with the works.
  • Understand the importance and procedures associated with correct operation and use of manual and automatic signals including their correct positioning in accordance with defined instructions.
  • Identify, as works progress, the need for the introduction of revised control measures including road closures, traffic diversion, single-file traffic, one-way traffic, additional pedestrian protection etc.

Course Duration

Four days for Novices or Managers or Two days for Experienced Personnel or One day Refresher.

Certification

Certificate of Attendance, and if required, for Candidates who are successful in achieving levels of competence required Unit 2 of the City and Guilds 6156 scheme (Street Works Excavation and Reinstatement).
