Aim

To provide delegates with guidance on the preparation of good quality specifications, using principles set out by the British Standards Institution.

Who Will Benefit

Anyone drafting specifications or involved in contracting for goods and services. The heart of any contract is the specification. Any failure to clearly define requirements will inevitably lead to increased costs.

The Course Covers

Seven comprehensive sessions will cover all relevant elements - from the introduction to the concept of specification through to management of the process.

  • Introduction
    • What is a specification? what it is for? what it should contain?
    • The importance of accuracy and consistency
  • Types of Specification:
    • Basic types of specification - build/test/installation/disposal/etc
    • Compare and contrast types and their use
  • Content and Preparation
    • The planning and preparation process
    • The content of each element of the specification
    • Issues to be considered: QA/safety/site specific/etc
  • Methods of Specifying
    • How requirements may be expressed
    • Practical issues arising - and potential pitfalls
  • Presentation
    • How style of presentation will affect ability to convey information
    • The issues of structure/text/terminology/illustrations/etc
  • Good and Bad Specifications
    • What makes a good or bad specification - arid who judges so?
    • Some discussion and examples
  • Management of the Process
    • What are the management issues in the process?
    • Elements such as policy/security/access/review/references will be examined
