Sit-on Road Rollers Course

Introduction

This course is designed for potential and existing Sit-on Road Rollar (Deadweight, Vibrating and Rubber Tyred) operators who have received no formal instruction and those requiring refresher training.

Objectives

To train operatives to prepare, safely operate and maintain their machine.

Course Content

By the end of the course, operatives should be able to:

  • Safely operate their machine up to an adequate output standard
  • Roll to a kerb, a camber, round curves and to any formation shape required.
  • Operate any system of adjustment to the weight, pressure, amplitude or frequency.
  • Operate any ancillary equipment which may be attached to a roller. e.g. spray bars, scarifier, asphalt cutter.
  • Carry out fault-finding, minor adjustments and routine servicing procedures in accordance with the manufacturers and employers instructions.
  • Load and off-load machines on and off a transporter

By the end of the course, operatives will know about:

  • Safety precautions which must be observed
  • The purpose and capabilities of their machine and any attachments
  • The principles of compaction
  • Rolling techniques
  • Methods of rolling compacting all types of road making materials
  • Rolling formation
  • Finishing coated tarmacadam and asphalt surfaces
  • Routine adjustments and how the road roller works
