Train the Trainer - Manual Handling for Care Staff

Introduction

Under the new Manual Handling Operations Regulations that came into force on 1st January 1993 employers are required to make an assessment of all manual handling operations and to take remedial action where there is an identifiable risk to employees.

This course is designed to train supervisors or managers of care staff to train their staff in the Manual Handling Regulations, to protect their backs, and the skills required in Manual Handling in a caring situation.

Aims

To assist the carer to prepare for and actively participate in a coaching and assessing session. To develop knowledge, understanding and the skills required in Manual Handling in a caring situation.

Objectives

At the end of the programme the carer will be able to:

• Explain how they can create a suitable learning environment.
• Explain the importance of coaching all carers in the importance of manual handling.
• Prepare a coaching session.
• Perform a coaching session.
• Assess the coaching sessions of the group.
• Begin to evaluate her/his own ability when coaching and assessing.

• Coaching/Teaching methods
• Manual Handling techniques:
  • Manually and with the use of mechanical equipment in the work area
  • Provide a background to the Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Risk Assessment
  • Preparation of a safety policy.
  • Inherent risk of back injury if not followed.
• The criteria for assessing manual handling.
• Presentation of a coaching session.
• Opportunity to assess coaching sessions.
