Introduction to Basic Mechanical Maintenance Techniques

Introduction

This course has been designed to teach the Basic Mechanical Maintenance Techniques to untrained personnel or as a refresher course.

Objectives

On completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Be aware of safety precautions and company policy to be observed when dealing with routine maintenance of mechanical machinery
  • Use basic hand tools that are appropriate for the work
  • Understand the principles of dismantling, inspection, and replacement of components in use in the workplace.
  • Understand the procedures to the adopted when removing guards prior to maintenance

The Course Covers

  • Health and Safety - Company safety policy - Mandatory requirements pertinent to the work - Permit to work procedure
  • Introduction to hand tools - Demonstration of correct usage and controlled practice
  • Portable power tools - Safe practice and use
  • COSHH Regulations - Safe procedures to company standards using in house cleaning agents and solvents - Hygiene applicable
  • Lubrication - needs - Materials - Method of application - practise
  • Company lock off procedure - practise in isolation, lock off and guard removal - fixed and interactive guards
  • Identification of supplies and means of isolation, emergency and non-emergency. - Electricity - Steam - Water - Air
  • Mechanical Drives and Linkages used in process plant - Fault finding in system - Replacement or repair? Considerations - Procedure for dismantling, need for logical approach - Introduction to sub-assemblies
  • Practise in dismantling - cleaning - inspection - Recording findings if necessary - Reassembly - All aspects to be practised by each participant
  • Procedure to refit sub assemblies or units to the machinery/plant - Checks on test run.
  • Clearance of permit to work
