Introduction to COSHH - interactive CDROM
Introduction
This course is designed for use by all employers whose work processes expose
employees to substances hazardous to health and by employees who require
information, instruction and training, in particular those who are expected to
conduct a risk assessment on the employers behalf.
This course deals with
the responsibilities of both employers and employees and explains the
requirement of COSHH Regulations to assess risks to health, decide that
precautions are needed, ensure that control measures are used and maintained
properly, and to provide information, instruction and training to all employees.

The course is designed to give students a thorough introduction to health and
safety in order to equip them to make the best decision possible.
Course Content
- What is COSHH ? - (5 mins)
Introduces the COSHH Regulations and explains what they are designed to
achieve.
- Responsibilities - (10 mins)
Considers who is responsible for implementing COSHH, who is protected under
COSHH and which industries and businesses are affected.
- What Does COSHH Cover ? - (10 mins)
Discusses what is and what is not covered by the Regulations.
- Hazard and Risk - (10 mins)
Explains the meaning of the terms 'hazard' and 'risk'.
- Toxic Effects - (15 mins)
Examines the different routes of entry into the body, explains 'acute' and
'chronic' exposures and occupational exposure limits.
- Assessment - (20 mins)
Covers the three stages of a COSHH assessment: recognising the hazards,
evaluating the risks, and the implementation of control measures.
- Information & Training - (5 mins)
Considers the requirements of the Regulations regarding the provision of
information and training for employees.
- Monitoring & Health Surveillance - (5 mins)
Explains when it would be necessary to monitor levels of exposure to workers,
and when it would be necessary to supplement this with a health surveillance
programme.
- Self Test - (10 mins)
Course Duration
