Metal Inert Gases (Basic) MIG Aluminium Plate Welding
Introduction
This course has been designed for any person who is or will be involved in
metal inert gas welding.
Objectives
To train course members in the safe use of the equipment and in basic MIG
welding skills using aluminum plate.
Aims
- To make course members aware of potential dangers that can arise by the
incorrect use of the equipment
- To be able to set up the equipment safely
- To be able to weld in the flat position to an acceptable standard
- To be able to adjust voltage/current to suit work
- To be able to recognize faults and causes
- To be able to rectify faults

- Safety in the use of equipment
- Personal safety
- Electrical safety
- Set-up and tacking procedure
- Dip transfer effect
- Spray transfer effect
- Torch angle
- Gases in use
- Adjustment of Voltage/Current control
- Adjustment of choke control
- Adjustments needed when changing wire size
Practical
- Correct safety procedures
- Correct setting of the machine
- Correct use of torch angle
- Correct set-up and tacking procedures
- Rectification of faults
- Correct speed of travel
- Fillet and lap joints in the flat position
- Single run technique
- Practice to reach an acceptable standard
