First Line Management Development

Introduction

This Workshop is a highly interactive and learner-centred course to develop the "people" skills of first line managers/supervisors.

Aims

The course is divided into two sessions, the first being a two day workshop when each delegate will have the opportunity to reflect on his own behaviour and the impact it has on others both positive and negative. From looking at personal resources the emphasis shifts to management skills and delegates will work with those practical, personal skills which help them to achieve optimum performance. The second, one day session, a month later, will focus on reviewing the delegates' projects, repeating skills practice as required, setting outcomes for the next three months and developing a mentoring framework.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, each delegate will have received feedback on:

  • His/her Communication style and the impact it has on others
  • His/her preferred method for handling conflict
  • His/her ability to involve and develop the skills of his team and will have practised:
    • Assertiveness Skills
    • Delegation skills
    • Active listening skills
    • Setting outcomes for himself and for his team members and evaluating performance
    • Delivering constructive feedback to his team members
    • Counselling team members on non-work issues

Notes

In order to facilitate the transfer of skills from workshop to workplace, each delegate will have a project which they will develop between the two day course and the one day follow up. It will require some input from both their manager and the members of their team.

Course Duration

Three days total. Two days then a one day follow-up four weeks later.
