IEMA Associate Certificate in Environmental Management 

Introduction

This course provides delegates with the range of knowledge and skills to meet the competency requirements of Associate Membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Once successfully completed candidates may become Associate Members and use the designation AIEMA after their name. The course is designed to raise the professional competence of environmental practitioners by assessing their knowledge and understanding of environmental management and its application. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed using a series of practical exercises/case studies and an end of course test.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at those people who want to expand their knowledge and understanding of environmental issues. Those involved in environmental improvements programmes and/or environmental management systems.

This course is particularly suitable for those wishing to broaden their qualifications and experience from other disciplines such as quality or health and safety.

Course content includes

  • Towards sustainability
    • implications of environmental, fiscal, societal and ethical values and social constraints on an organisation.
    • the basic parameters of eco-efficiency and design for the environment.
    • the importance of effective resource management including materials elimination or substitution, recycling, carbon management, waste reduction, the efficient use of energy and the role of renewable energy.
  • Instruments for change
    • types of instruments available to achieve change and the role they play (e.g. information, financial and legislative instruments and voluntary
      measures).
    • the UK regulatory framework: relationships between UK, EC and international law, civil and criminal law and the regulators.
  • Controls on emissions to the atmosphere
    • the key agreements, protocols, EC directives /regulations and UK controls/policies
    • operational implications of key controls (e.g. prescribed processes, authorisations to release prescribed substances to the atmosphere, key
      terms such as BATNEEC etc.)
  • Controls on the management of contained waste
    • the operational implications of key controls e.g. duty of care, special wastes, licensing of carriers, waste management licensing.
    • waste minimisation techniques.
  • Controls on discharges to the water environment
    • explain the operational implications of key controls e.g. water quality standards,
    • cost implications of discharges to sewers, issues relating to site drainage.
  • Issues relating to contaminated land
    • the key instruments and the role of the regulators.
    • the operational controls of the mechanisms.
  • Nuisance
    • the key instruments and the role of the regulators.
    • the nature of civil law with respect to nuisance and know the prime regulatory mechanisms.
  • Producer responsibility
    • the key instruments: EC directives/regulations, UK controls/ policies, and explain the role of the regulators.
    • the operational implications of the UK packaging regulations.
  • Other relevant legislation
    • the planning law relating to environmental considerations.
    • the manner in which radioactive materials are covered by legislation.
    • the main legislation covering storage of hazardous materials.
  • Identification and assessment of environmental impacts
    • understand the role of the review as a means of systematically identifying significant issues, significant relevant legislation and evaluating current environmental management.
    • the design and implementation of a preparatory review and environmental risk assessment.
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
    • the standards for certificated EMS e.g. ISO14001, EMAS
    • the purpose of an EMS in terms of controlling and improving environmental performance
    • the principles, objectives and practice of an EMS Monitoring system
    • understand the role and importance of monitoring.
  • Environmental audit
    • the role of the environmental audit and situations in which it is applicable.
    • the design and implementation of an audit process within an EMS.
  • Life Cycle Analysis
    • the role of LCA in evaluating the environmental burden Identification and assessment of environmental impacts
    • demonstrate an understanding of various approaches to the environmental review, environmental risk assessment and the identification of significant impacts.
    • the design and implementation of a preparatory review and environmental risk assessment.

Assessment

The course is assessed through the completion of a written exam of two and a half hours duration. In addition candidates have to complete a preliminary environmental review of a chosen workplace.

IEMA membership for the first year is included in the course fees plus a copy of the NSCA Pollution handbook.
