This course has been designed for staff in the physical disability or
learning disabilities field who need to learn more about mental health problems
and mental health services and to look at issues surrounding the provision of
services for customers with multiple needs.
Objectives
To look at the historical context of how society perceives people who have
learning disabilities or physical disabilities and a mental health problem.
To consider definitions as outlined in legislation of 'mental
impairment" and 'mental disorder'.
To think about the relevance of a diagnosis of a mental disorder.
To look at life through the eyes of someone who has a learning disability
or a physical disability and how this may affect their mental health.
To consider the use of a mental health assessment in gaining access to
appropriate mental health services.

Major labels and symptoms: What is mental illness and who is affected by
it ?
Why people get mental health problems: Issues relating to family,
environment, services, professionals
Behaviour problems as communication
What an assessment does and does not provide: Understanding mental health
services
Getting access to other services: Therapy/group work
