Legionella
Introduction
This short course was developed for maintenance personnel involved in the
installation and maintenance of equipment susceptible to contamination by the
bacteria Legionella. It will help them to identify approved methods of design,
control and maintenance of water and air-conditioning systems.
Aims
To develop participants knowledge of 'Legionnaires Disease', the
conditions in which it thrives and the precautions and procedures necessary to
eliminate the problem.

- Definition of Legionnaires' Disease
- Identifying the section of population most at risk
- Conditions that encourage the growth of the bacteria
- How the bacteria is transmitted
- Identifying potential problems in given hot and cold water systems
- Procedures for cleaning hot and cold water systems
- Identifying potential problems in air-conditioning systems
- Identifying potential problems in cooling tower units
- Planned maintenance and good practice
- Designing a simple planned maintenance programme
