Introduction to Supporting People with their Sexuality

Introduction

This course is designed for staff who are supporting people with learning disabilities.

Aims

To enable staff to become confident in talking and supporting, or seeking appropriate assistance for people with learning disabilities in the area of their sexuality.

Objectives

  • To explore our own values in relation to sexuality
  • To look at the issue of consent
  • To explore the facts and myths which surround sexuality specifically in relation to people with a learning disability
  • To examine the possible implications of an open approach to the issue of sexuality (legal and practical)
  • To explore the practical support that can be given to people with a learning disability working through these issues
  • To identify the expectations of how staff will deal with the issue via the organizations policy and guidance

Course Duration

Two to three days (this course is a pre-requisite to the Introduction of Abuse course)
