A video based training programme on "on-the-job' training.
The video programme focuses on the story of George.
George is an inventory manager with difficulties at work in teaching people how
to use a new computer system. He tends to blame 'incompetent staff' for the
teething problems that they are having. What it comes down to is that he can not
train them.
In a moment of bravado, George has agreed to go sky diving as part of an
outdoor, adventure learning programme. After the first scenes at the office
where his inability to instruct has been causing problems with the computer
system, we go home with George and delve into his dreams. He dreams about his
up-coming sky diving attempt. The instructor is an old fashioned, military type
instructor who screams a lot and promises there's nothing like "being thrown in
at the deep end". George awakes from his nightmare as he falls screaming from
his plane.
The next morning finds George at the sky diving training centre for real. In
a twist to the tale, his instructor turns out to be Wendy, one of his staff who
just yesterday had been on the receiving end of his inept training attempts.
Wendy introduces George to Simon, a sky diver who is training to be a jump
instructor. Wendy firstly helps Simon (and George) understand the need to
prepare to train. Then she introduces the TIPS process. T for tell, I for
illustrate, P for practice and S for support and check. As Wendy teaches Simon,
George realises how easily he can apply these same techniques to his work place.
With Wendy's instruction, George completes a successful jump.
In the second, summary video, each of the critical points is repeated in an
order designed to complement the extensive supporting training materials. These
materials will focus you on delivering to people not only the successful
training formula from the film, but also the necessity for understanding how
people learn and preparing to explain the instruction, areas that are not easily
illustrated in the video. As with all good video based instruction, the video
elements lay the groundwork for successful learning by discovery. The role plays
and exercises supplied in the course materials will reinforce and fill out the
learning process. Your materials package will provide enough substance for a
full two day training programme.
